The police station was a flurry of activity, every chair in the waiting room filled with anxious faces. A woman in a winter coat and flannel pajama bottoms fed a baggie of cereal to her hungry toddler as she shouted into her cell phone. An older woman sat beside her, her lips silently working over prayers on the rosary beads she clutched between her fingers. A young man slouched in his seat, eyes closed, seemingly unfazed by the surrounding chaos.
Journey strode up to the front desk and asked to speak with the arresting officer on the Emmett Cohen case.
As they waited, Lucas unwrapped a piece of gum and offered it to Journey. âIâve got coffee breath.â
She took the gum with an amused smirk. âYou trying to tell me something?â But before he had time to answer, they were buzzed through to an inner office.
Inside, they met Officer Martin, a man with gray temples, biceps bulging within his uniform, and a waistline thickened with age.
When Journey and Lucas flashed their IDs, Martin nodded at Journeyâs introduction but didnât offer his hand or a first name.
Journey went on, refusing to acknowledge the slight. âWe understand you have a man in custody by the name of Emmett Cohen and that the weapon in his possession at the time of arrest matches the serial number of one stolen from Faulknerâs Guns and Ammo.â
Martin dropped his head and shook itâthe behavior of an exasperated man. âIf you Feds plan to show up every time we get an attempted armed robbery that turns up a stolen weapon, you better clear your calendars.â
Lucas didnât pause to marinate in Martinâs sarcasm. âYou got more stolen guns we should know about?â
âYou got a reason I need to spend time briefing you on Cohen?â Martin flicked his chin toward the waiting room. âItâs mayhem in here today, in case you havenât noticed.â
Journey stepped farther down the hall, forcing Martin and Lucas to follow her into the depths of the station. âYou have a room where we can talk?â
âConvince me that right hereâs not a good place to hear what youâve got to say, and maybe Iâll go find one.â
She studied Martinâs face, trying to get a read on him. Cool receptions like his no longer shocked her. Not like when she was a new agent, young and green and eager to please. In her nearly ten years with the Bureau, sheâd learned that the first step in weaseling into a resistant officerâs good graces was to figure out which variety of bug was up their ass.
A few officers were just assholes. Acting like that was a lousy way to spend a life, so at least she wasnât doomed to such an existence herself.
Martin checked his watch and huffed, leading her to suspect he was just a jerk with too much to do.
She got straight to the point. âLook, from what ATF told us, youâre holding Cohen for a robbery in which nobody was hurt. But weâre looking for the perpetrator
